Categories A, A1, A2, AM

A, A1, A2, AM driving categories include motorcycles, tricycles, mopeds and light quadricycles. Depending on the mass and power of the vehicle, these categories can be driven from different ages. Motorcycles in Lithuania are a vehicle more often used in the warm season, usually to cover shorter distances than a car. Let's review the features and differences of categories A, A1, A2, AM.

In order to obtain a category A driving license, it is necessary to pass the theoretical examination of the Regitra. KET tickets are simulated Regitra theory exams that help drivers of all categories learn the rules of the road and prepare for the exams. For those who want to update their road rules or prepare for the Regitra exam, we recommend trying our free ket test .

Categories A, A1, A2, AM

What are driving categories A, A1, A2, AM and how do they differ?

Category A

Driving category A includes tricycles with a power of more than 15 kW and motorcycles. With a category A driving license, you can drive vehicles classified in categories AM, A1, A2 without any restrictions.

Category A1

Category A1 includes motorcycles with an engine displacement of more than 50 cm3 but not more than 125 cm3, a power output not exceeding 11 kW, and a power-to-weight ratio not exceeding 0.1 kW/kg, as well as tricycles with a power output not exceeding 15 kW.

Category A2

Category A2 includes motorcycles with a power not exceeding 35 kW, a power-to-weight ratio not exceeding 0.2 kW/kg and which are not derived from a vehicle with more than twice the power.

AM category

The AM category includes mopeds and light quadricycles.

Moped – a two-wheeled motor vehicle with a maximum design speed of not less than 25 km/h and not more than 45 km/h and with an engine displacement not exceeding 50 cm3 (in the case of an internal combustion engine) and a maximum net power not exceeding 4 kW (in the case of an electric motor), or a three-wheeled motor vehicle with a maximum design speed of not less than 25 km/h and not more than 45 km/h and with an engine displacement not exceeding 50 cm3 (in the case of a spark (positive) ignition engine), a maximum net power not exceeding 4 kW (in the case of another type of internal combustion engine), and a maximum net power not exceeding 4 kW (in the case of an electric motor).

Light quadricycle – a four-wheeled motor vehicle with an unladen mass (excluding batteries, if it is an electric motor-powered vehicle) of no more than 350 kg, a maximum design speed of no more than 45 km/h and an engine displacement of no more than 50 cm3 (in the case of a spark (positive) ignition engine), a maximum net power of no more than 4 kW (in the case of a different type of internal combustion engine), and a maximum nominal power of no more than 4 kW (in the case of an electric motor).

Thus, the main differences between categories A, A1, A2, AM are the power of the vehicles. With categories A, A1, A2 you can drive motorcycles, with category A you can drive tricycles, and with category AM you can drive only mopeds and light quadricycles.

  • Other possible costs. You may also have to pay for a health check (up to 40 EUR), a first aid course completion certificate (up to 30 EUR) and additional driving lessons to consolidate your knowledge. Additional lessons cost around 50 EUR/ac. hour, depending on the school or teacher.

The cost of maintaining the AM category includes 3 aspects, which are presented below:

  • Driving theory learning. Its price depends on whether you will study the theory externally (independently) or with a group. If you study driving theory independently, you will not have to pay extra for this part, but if you choose to study with a group, theory lessons will cost from 50 EUR.

If you study externally with the help of EKET.LT KET test solution plans, you will have 7 days of unlimited solutions now for only 5.40 EUR, and when choosing 14 or 31-day plans, they will additionally include individual driving instructor consultation and group remote lectures. The 14-day package at EKET.LT now costs 7.70 EUR, and the 31-day package costs 14.90 EUR. You can try 200-question KET tests for the AM category for free.

  • Taking the theory exam at "Regitra". The price of this theoretical knowledge test (for the AM category) is 10 Eur.

  • Other possible costs: You may also have to pay for a health check (up to 40 EUR) and a first aid course completion certificate (up to 30 EUR).

It is important to note that the cost of maintaining all categories of rights depends largely on each individual's abilities; some may be able to pass the exams on the first try, while others may have to pay for additional driving lessons or retake exams.

Here you will find answers to common questions. If you did not find your question, click Contact us and we will gladly help.

No, to obtain an AM category license it is enough to pass only the theory exam in Regitra.

Low-power mopeds (up to 50 cm³) and light quadricycles with a maximum speed of 45 km/h.

To drive a powerful quadricycle you need A and B categories, except when it is registered in the municipal Agricultural Department – then an SM (SKM) license is sufficient.

Yes, you do.

Studying only from the KET book on your own makes it hard to master everything. EKET.LT packages show real questions and format, help you see mistakes, understand logic, and prepare better for Regitra exams.

You can get an AM category license from the age of 15, after passing the theory exam in Regitra (no practical exam required).

Yes, when taking the B category exam you can add 5 extra questions from the A category. This way you pass both A1 and B theory at the same time.

Yes, it is required, unless you already have at least 2 years of B category driving experience (then only courses are needed, but your license will be valid only in Lithuania).
