Railway crossing

A railway crossing is a place where a railway and a road intersect at the same level. Driving across a railway crossing is quite dangerous, but if you follow the traffic rules and precautions, it is not difficult. Rail vehicles (trains) cannot stop as quickly as cars, so cars must let them pass. If a car gets stuck on the tracks, it is important to get out of the vehicle as quickly as possible and take the necessary safety measures.

KET tickets help drivers acquire the necessary theoretical knowledge about safe behavior at level crossings, correct understanding of road signs and signals, and appropriate actions in various situations, thus ensuring safety on the road. We offer you to brush up on your KET knowledge with our free KET tickets .

Railway crossing

When and how should I miss the train?

If you see an approaching train, you must always let it pass , because the rail vehicle cannot stop quickly. When letting a train pass, you must stop before the STOP line, STOP sign, barrier, or no closer than 10 m from the first rail. You may only drive through a level crossing after making sure that a train is not approaching the level crossing.

What do railway traffic light signals mean?

  • A white flashing signal allows you to proceed after making sure that a train is not approaching the railway crossing.

  • One red or two alternately flashing red signals prohibit traffic at a railway crossing.

At railway crossings, a red traffic light signal may be duplicated by an audible signal.

What is prohibited at railway crossings?

  • Crossing the railway in places not designated for that purpose.

  • To pass other vehicles that have stopped before the railway crossing, to pass rail vehicles.

  • Entering a crossing when the barrier is down, arbitrarily raising the barrier.

  • Entering a crossing if there is an obstacle behind it that forces you to stop at the crossing.

  • Overtake at the crossing, as well as within 100 meters of it.

  • Stop and stand at the crossing, as well as within 50 meters before and after it.

  • To drive animals or birds, to ride horses (where there are no specially designated places for this).

  • Transport agricultural, road, construction and other machinery not specially prepared for transport through a railway crossing if this could damage the railway crossing equipment.

  • Driving through a railway crossing in a wheelchair without an accompanying person.

  • It is recommended that children under the age of 12 be accompanied by an adult (at least 21 years old) when crossing a railway crossing.

What to do if you are forced to stop at a railway crossing (on the tracks)?

  • Disembark passengers immediately;

  • Take all steps to remove the vehicle from the railway crossing;

  • If the vehicle cannot be pulled over, signal the driver of the approaching rail vehicle. A stop signal is considered to be a hand gesture in a circle during daylight hours – with a brightly colored, clearly visible object, and during darkness – with a torch or lantern.

Frequently asked questions

Here you will find answers to common questions. If you did not find your question, click Contact us and we will gladly help.

It is allowed to cross a railway crossing with such a vehicle only after obtaining permission from the railway infrastructure manager.

In fact, the sound signal is activated first, but no one can prove that you heard it.

As for the traffic light:

Traffic Rules 166. A driver who, when the yellow (or white horizontal bar-shaped) traffic light signal lights up or the traffic controller raises his hand up, could only stop at the places specified in Rule 165 by braking sharply, is allowed to continue driving.

There is no separate traffic rule point specifically for railway crossings.
