Tractor driving license: categories, requirements, costs

Tractor rights

A tractor license is a license that you will need to drive a tractor. There are four categories of tractors and self-propelled machines in Lithuania: TR1, TR2, SZ and SM. A tractor license is required for those who want to use a tractor for agricultural, forestry, construction or similar purposes.

The rights of tractor drivers, like those of other vehicles, are related to road traffic rules (KT) tickets, because in order to obtain the right to drive a tractor, it is necessary to pass a theoretical exam. Our free KET test can help drivers of all vehicles learn and revise the rules of the road .

Tractor driving license: categories, requirements, costs

TR1 category

TR1 category is the main category that qualifies as a tractor driver. TR1 category is valuable in that it develops driving skills that will be useful in the future in order to learn to drive other vehicles.

What can you drive with a TR1 category?

Having obtained the TR1 category, you are entitled to drive wheeled agricultural and forestry tractors and tracked tractors and tractor combinations with trailers, agricultural machinery, as well as tractors with mounted mechanisms (excavators, bulldozers, loaders, etc.) with an engine power of up to 60 kW.

Is it possible to drive a scooter with a TR1 category?

No. A tractor or self-propelled machinery driving license does not entitle you to drive AM category vehicles. To do this, you must have the AM category itself, or any higher category than AM (A, B, C, D).

At what age can you start learning TR1 category?

The right to learn to drive TR1 category tractors is granted to persons at least 15 years of age (without the right to drive on roads until they reach the age of 16).

TR1 category – price

Maintaining TR1 category rights costs  60–75 EUR . The state can compensate for training and provide additional compensation during the training period.

TR2 category

The TR2 category differs from the TR1 category in that the TR2 category allows you to drive more powerful tractors, 60kW or more. To obtain the TR2 category, a minimum education is required: basic and TR1 tractor driver qualification.

What can you drive with a TR2 category?

Once you have obtained the TR2 category, you will be able to drive wheeled agricultural and forestry tractors, tracked tractors and tractor combinations with trailers, agricultural machinery, as well as tractors with mounted mechanisms (excavators, bulldozers, loaders, etc.) with an engine power of 60 kW or more.

At what age can you start learning TR2 category?

Persons from the age of 17 can begin studying and hold the TR2 category .

Tractor rights – price (category A2)

Maintaining TR1 category rights costs 60–75 EUR . The state can compensate for training and provide additional compensation during the training period.

Category SZ

The SZ category allows you to drive self-propelled agricultural machinery. When you come to the driving school to hold the SZ category, you will need to have with you not only your identity card or passport, a driver's medical certificate, but also a TR1 category tractor driver's license.

What can you drive with the SZ category?

The SZ category includes self-propelled agricultural machinery (self-propelled harvesters for grain, sugar beet, potato, fodder, etc., self-propelled mowers), so you could drive them after passing the SZ category courses.

At what age can you start studying for the SZ category?

The SZ category can be held by persons aged 17 and over .

SZ category price

Maintaining SZ category rights costs 60–75 EUR . The state may compensate for training and provide additional compensation during the training period.

SM category

The SM category allows you to drive non-agricultural machinery. To obtain this category, you must also have a TR1 category tractor driver's license.

What can you drive with an SM category?

The SM category includes non-agricultural machinery, i.e. special earthmoving, transportation, land reclamation, forestry, road surface preparation and maintenance machinery, and others that do not belong to the category of self-propelled agricultural machinery.

At what age can one start studying for the SM category?

The SM category can be held by persons aged 17 and over .

SM category price

Maintaining SM category rights costs 60–75 EUR . The state may compensate for training and provide additional compensation during the training period.

"Regitra" tractor rights

You do not need to hold a tractor license in the "Registry" , that is, you do not need to take practical and/or theoretical tractor license exams in the "Registry". You can simply get a tractor license at any driving school that trains TR category drivers. This applies to all four tractor categories - TR1, TR2, SZ, SM.

Who can drive a tractor?

The rules for the training of tractor and self-propelled machine drivers (tractor operators) and the acquisition of the right to drive these vehicles state that motor vehicle driving licenses granting the right to drive motor vehicles of categories C1, C, C1E, CE, D, D1, DE or D1E also grant the right to drive tractors of categories TR1, TR2 and self-propelled agricultural machines of category SZ. Those who have the right to drive category B vehicles acquire the right to drive tractors of category TR1.

Persons holding driving licenses of the relevant categories and seeking to drive tractors or self-propelled agricultural machinery do not need a separate tractor driver's license . A person holding a category B driving license may drive tractors with an engine power of up to 60 kW. Persons holding a category B driver's license have the right to drive tractors of all categories, regardless of their power, and all self-propelled agricultural machinery: grain and other combines, self-propelled sprayers, loaders.

Tractor rights – change

A tractor driver's license must be replaced if:

  • Your previous tractor driver's license has expired;

  • The certificate is no longer suitable for use – worn out, damaged, lost;

  • Personal data (surname, first name) has changed;

  • The person has acquired the right to drive tractors and self-propelled machines of other categories than those previously specified in the tractor driver's license.

The following documents are required to replace a tractor driver's license:

  • Identity card or passport;

  • Driver's medical certificate (with a note stating that you can drive tractors);

  • 1 photo (3×4 format);

  • Old tractor operator's license (original). If the tractor operator's license is lost, then have an old TR1 TR2 SZ SM tractor operator's excavator training or training course completion certificate.

You can replace your tractor driver's license at driving schools that issue tractor licenses or at relevant training institutions. If you lose your tractor driver's license for one year or more, you must retake the qualification exam.

Tractor rights change – price

Replacing a tractor driver's license costs about 35 EUR .
