What is the difference between A, B, C, and D category theory exams?

The main difference is the number of specific questions. The theory exam consists of 30 general questions, and additional specific questions are provided for A, C, and D category groups. This results in differences in the total number of questions, test duration, and the number of allowable errors. 

The principle is simple: for the A category group, 5 specific questions are added to the 30 general questions, while for the C and D (T) groups, 10 specific questions are added. According to the AB "Regitra" theory exam evaluation procedure, the exam is allocated as many minutes as there are questions in the test.

Although the scope of the tests varies, the passing threshold is the same for all categories: at least 80% of the questions must be answered correctly. The theory exam fee is also the same – 10.00 EUR, regardless of the category.

The language choice is also the same for all categories: the theory exam can be taken in Lithuanian, English, Polish, Spanish, French, German, or Ukrainian.

What specific questions are included in the A, C, and D category exams?

Specific questions test knowledge related to the characteristics of vehicles in specific categories and their safe operation, so different topics apply to category groups. These are defined in the theory exam topic list published by "Regitra." 

A category group (A1, A2, A) questions cover the use of motorcyclist safety equipment, risks associated with other road users, and risks related to motorcycle characteristics and technical condition. Knowledge about motorcyclist visibility, tire pressure impact, brake usage, and checking the condition of key motorcycle elements is also tested. 

C and C1 category specific topics include:

• safe vehicle operation and response to critical situations;

• vehicle equipment, technical maintenance, and inspection requirements;

• road traffic rules and other legal requirements relevant to freight transport;

• driver responsibility for cargo transportation;

• vehicle construction, operation, maintenance, and technical aspects important for safe use.

D category group and T category apply the same "Regitra" specific topic groups as the C category group: additionally, knowledge about legal requirements important for freight and passenger transport, driver responsibility for cargo and passenger transportation, and vehicle construction, operation, and maintenance is tested. 

Practical conclusion: A B category driver aiming for a C or D category already has general KET knowledge but should prepare separately for additional specific topics. Before choosing a new category, it is worth comparing driving schools by the categories taught and student reviews. 

What are the common requirements and conditions for all categories?

The general sequence of exams is as follows: first, the theory exam is taken, and upon passing it, the practical exam is taken. When arriving for the theory exam, you must have an identity document, a valid driver's medical certificate, and a first aid certificate. These and other examination requirements are set out in the Description of Conditions and Procedures for the Examination of Motor Vehicle Drivers. 

The first aid training program varies by driver category. The PP015 program is intended for AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, and BE category drivers, while PP014 is for C, D, and T category drivers. The theoretical part can be completed remotely through first aid courses, but the practical part takes place in person.

Age requirements depend on the category:

• AM – 15 years.

• A1 – 16 years.

• A2 and B – 18 years.

• A – 20 years, with at least two years of A2 category driving experience; from 24 years, this experience requirement is not applied.

• C – 21 years, except for individuals who have obtained initial professional qualification for transporting goods in the prescribed manner.

• D – 24 years, except for individuals who have obtained initial professional qualification for transporting passengers in the prescribed manner.

• T – 21 years.

From November 1, 2026, the procedure for obtaining the AM category changes: the minimum age increases from 15 to 16 years, and alongside the theory exam, a practical exam becomes mandatory, taken while riding a moped. Until this date, passing the theory exam is sufficient to obtain the AM category.
